What is information design?

The textbook provide a very clear definition of Information design. The Society for Technical Communication describes Information design as
“the translating [of] complex, unorganized, or unstructured data into valuable, meaningful information.” (Baer 12).
Well designed and easy to understand information leads to actions and help us in making the right decision or choice.  When we instantly know which door to walk in and out, which subway line and train terminal will get us to where we are trying to go, how a new product, toy and furniture can be assembled, , we are likely experiencing well designed information.
Information design is all around us but we don’t realize how important it becomes in emergency situations. In emergency situations we look for warning signs and symbols:  the EXIT sign, H for hospital, In case of Fire Break Glass, the symbol for flammable objects, the skull and crossbones symbol for danger like High Voltage or Toxic material etc. In such a situation efficiently designed information guide and help us in making the right decision or choice that can save our lives.
What we need is not more information but the ability to present the right information to the right people at the right time, in the most effective and efficient form.”
---Robert E. Horn
Information design shapes the information in such a way that it communicates the message quickly and effectively to the viewers. Well designed and easy to understand information leads to actions and ultimately influence the decisions we make.
